    Purge Pump Primer
The purge pump primer feature enables the user to prime the carburetor with fuel, enabling easier starting. The purge pump primer is designed in a way that the operator cannot flood the machine by priming the carburetor too many times. Flooding the engine is still possible if the choke is not removed after the engine fires.

BG 50 is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 420.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Entry-Level Blower If you're shopping for a blower that will blow dry leaves in a yard up to about 2 acres really well, move those pesky sweet gum gumballs and blows grass clippings without disturbing my mulch when idling, this is a no-brainer. Admittedly, the starting sequence is a bit daunting at first, but once you learn, its pretty simple. The reviews that indicate this is hard to start are probably written by the uninformed.Case in point: My wife tried to use our BG 50 one day while I was at work and called me using almost exactly the same words as some of these reviews, basically saying it was junk and she couldn't get it started. A month or so later, she needed to use the blower while I was out of town for an extended period. I demonstrated the exact starting sequence (that works 100% of the time, btw) and had her do it under my supervision to make sure she had absorbed it. From that week on, she has been able to start it every time with no issues. The beauty of buying STIHL is that you have the advantage one-on-one service and support at your local dealer. The salesperson is actually supposed to demo the startup with you at the store, though they don't always follow through. So ask your dealer to show you the proper way to start it - he won't say no. There are also STIHL-produced videos on Youtube (and the site you are on right now). One more thing - if pulling the start rope is just too much for you - go battery. I recently upgraded to the FSA 56 trimmer from a gas one and it literally starts with the push of a button. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to start At the dealer I asked for a blower that was easy to start because my wife has a hard time pulling the cord. What I found was this blower is hard for me to start and I’m a lot stronger than my wife. After many pulls just like the dealer said to do it finally started. I let it idle for a while like the dealer said and it died. I use the premixed gas from dealer so I know it’s not that. Don’t like having to pamper a blower just to get it to run. Not happy with this blower at all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lightweight and handy when it starts Maybe I bought the lemon .. when this blower runs it’s great. Lightweight and maneuverable. Pretty handy although it does use fuel rapidly. The only problem I consistently battle is it starting. Some days are fine. Some days it just will not start. Very frustrating.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from If you can ever get it started... You can tell by the revised starting procedure in the owners manual (pages 12 and 13 are printed twice, with the unbound pages to take the place of the originals) that starting this model is a chore. When it is started and warm it works great. I own two other Stihl trimmers that start and run flawlessly and have given me great service over the years. Stihl should at least give owners of this product credit towards another product in their lineup that they could easily start and use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I hoped for After being frustrated with my other two blowers (not Stihl) I decided to purchase a quality blower. I was surprised at the heart price of this unit and all very pleased with its performance. My kids can easily start it and its easily powerful enough for the basic homeowner. I have three acres and a bunch of oak trees... I'm confident that this little blower is all I'll need to get the job done and allow my eleven year old don to work when I'm not here to help him out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight & easy to use Light enough for my wife to use & has a lot of power

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent step-up from power cord blower for homeowner After using an electrical cord blower for over 15 years it was time to retire it. Not that it didn't work well, I just got tired of tripping over power cords and being limited by the distance of the cord. And the nozzle clips had snapped off and the duct tape holding it on kept slipping off. That and it had only one speed... hurricane blast.I've owned a Stihl FS85 trimmer for almost 20 years and am impressed with its quality and reliability. So I looked at various blowers and decided on the Stihl BG50. After about a month's usage I am extremely satisfied with both the blower and convenience of not needing a power cord. I have a small yard with lots of landscaping and trees and have to maneuver around a lot of tight spaces. Even though the force of the blower does not quite match that of the older power cord blower I had, it still has enough for my needs. Plus the soft force when on idle is enough to clear off grass clippings from decorative curbing and paver stones and leave the adjacent mulch intact.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worse stihl that I have owned Bought it the second time I used it within a week , I had to carry it in and let them replace the carburetor. It has never ran right . I have had weed eaters and chain saws but this blower stinks . Save your money and buy something better.
